Adobe has released a free update to Illustrator 9. The new version, 9.0.1, fixes bugs and improves overall performance of the application. Adobe says this update does not yet address compatibility issues with Photoshop 6 but that an update will be available later this year.

New features in Illustrator 9.0.1 include:

  • Enhanced Performance: Selecting artwork and working in Outline mode is faster.
  • Optimized internally to take advantage of the Macintosh G4 Velocity Engine and Intel Pentium III processors' Streaming SIMD Extensions.
  • Scratch disk use is minimized.
  • Exporting files to SVG format is faster.
  • Improved File Integrity: The window shade issue is resolved.
  • Groups included in compound paths round trip when saved as PDF 1.3 and 1.4.
  • Vertically scaled text now exports correctly to SVG.
  • The Euro character now displays and prints correctly.
  • Improved Stability: Opening files no longer generates erroneous out of memory warnings.
  • The Sangam2Mapper plug-in no longer causes freezes when launching.
  • iMode rasterization settings now appear in the Save for Web dialog.
  • Force Fonts to Download option now works correctly with EFI Fiery RIPs in Japan.
