Bitstream today
announced it's releasing its second set of fonts from the New Font Collection
program. The new release features fonts from Charles Gibbons, Eduardo Manso, Harry
Pears of Typeface Research and Margaret Layson. All the fonts are available in
TrueType and PostScript Type 1 formats for both Windows and the Macintosh.
Bitstream announced
the New Font Collection program on August 8 of this year. It's a program that
actively looks for new fonts from designers outside the Bitstream fold, allowing
anyone's designs to be considered for publication. Designs are selected and published
on a quarterly basis. The first NFC release, completed in September, included
designs from Holly Goldsmith and John Downer.
The latest
release includes Aphasia by Charles Gibbons, Eroxion by Eduardo Manso and Lindisfarne
Nova and Lindisfarne Nova Bold by Harry Pears of Typeface Research and Margaret
Layson.
A while back,
we had the chance to talk to Bitstream about its NFC program.
"... This
program is not only for new designers but also for established designers,"
said Bob Thomas, director of product management for Bitstream. "The Bitstream
Typeface Library is now 19 years old and includes over 1,400 fonts in both TrueType
and PostScript formats for the Macintosh, Windows, and Unix. We are launching
this program to invigorate the Bitstream library with contemporary designs from
around the world. Essentially, we are looking for good designs, whether or not
they are from designers who have created shareware fonts."
Thomas said
Bitstream is offering a number of royalty options for designers of fonts selected
for the program. "One royalty option is to offer fonts exclusively through
Bitstream, for which a font designers gets the highest royalty return. Other royalty
options require only that the first year is exclusive; with these other options,
the designer gets a higher royalty than in subsequent years. We believe that the
first year will provide the most interest in the font precisely because it is
new."
