Flaming Pear, a developer of plugins for Adobe Photoshop, has released a new filter called Melancholytron. Melancholytron makes pictures blurry, dark and discolored to create "moody" scenes from standard RGB images. The plugin can affect the shape of the effect, the blurriness and the color. Melancholytron's effects are applied from zero to full strength across the image according to a gradient. Shape specifies a round, horizontal or vertical gradient. Clear Area opens up a zero-strength region in the center of the gradient.

Focus makes the image blurry to simulate depth of field. Color blur smears only the color while leaving the luminance intact. CB width controls how blurry the color becomes.

  • In terms of color, there are controls for the following parameters:
  • Saturation, which infuences the vividness of the colors;
  • Dampen makes vivid colors darker;
  • Vignette, which fades the edges of the picture to a uniform color;
  • Sepia, which applies a tint to the image.

Melancholytron is available now for $20 or in a bundle with two other filters for $40. For more information visit http://www.flamingpear.com.
