Hewlett-Packard today unveiled a new UV printing system designed for the HP Designjet 5000 series. The new ink system is UV-based and can be interchanged with HP's dye-based HP 81 system, according to the company. HP is also announcing the release of HP Durable Image Gloss UV printing material, which offers smear and moisture resistance for both indoor and outdoor applications. The coating is designed to provide fast drying for immediate lamination.

Features of the new HP 83 UV system include:

  • Six-color inks, including light cyan and light magenta, for a color gamut and image quality comparable to HP's dye-based inks;
  • UV inks deliver long-lasting, lightfast prints with an outdoor limited warranty of three years under the 3M Matched Component System and an expected indoor fade resistance of up to 200 years;
  • High-speed UV printing with HP Jetexpress technology, which uses wide print heads for a broader print swath and high-resolution print modes, HP Designjet 5000 UV printing systems deliver images at speeds of more than 500 square feet per hour, according to HP.

In North America, the HP Designjet 5000 series printing systems ship directly with either HP 83 UV inks or HP 81 dye-based inks. Separate HP UV or dye-based ink upgrade kits also will be available. The HP Designjet 5000 UV printing system is expected to be available in March for $10,495 for the 42" model.

The HP 83 UV ink cartridges and the HP 83 UV print head cleaners are available for $335 and $140, respectively. The HP 83 UV Value Pack, which includes both the cartridges and the print head cleaners, is available for $405. The HP UV ink upgrade kit, including HP 83 UV ink supplies, are expected to be available in March for $2,789. The HP dye-based ink upgrade kit, including HP 81 dye ink supplies, also are expected to be available in March at an estimated list price of $2,210. The HP Durable Image gloss UV printing material is expected to be available in a 36" width in March and in 42" and 60" widths in early May.
