Video Tutorial: Ligatures in Adobe InDesign
A simple trick to get fl and fi characters looking right

by Deke McClelland
Total Training

In this clip from Total InDesign, Deke McClelland demonstrates InDesign's prowess at using ligatures. When the character "f" is followed by an "i" or an "l," the results can be less than pleasing to the eye. Ligatures solve this problem by replacing these combinations with a single attractive character. As Deke explains, ligatures are otherwise "impossible" to achieve on the PC and are obscured deep within the recesses of the Mac, but InDesign makes them a breeze on either platform. The next time you have to type the word "firefly", you'll be very glad you watched this clip.
