Okay, so far we’ve only been animating stuff, you could do that easily in After Effects. Now let’s link to these Sub Comps. Create a Text Layer that reads Rotation and position it in the Comp Window. Make the text color White. In the Timeline highlight the Text layer, press the Enter key and name the layer Rotation (or whatever name you want to call the layer, it doesn’t really matter).[an error occurred while processing this directive] ![]() Now we can link to our star animation. Actually, we are going to be linking from one layer’s State to another layer’s State. Highlight the Star Base layer in the Timeline. In the State Palette select the Rotation State (The State for the Star changes to Rotation). ![]() Now click on the Rotation layer (the text layer). Create a new State for the Rotation Layer. We can leave this one as the default Over State. Make sure the Over state is selected for the Rotation layer in the State Palette. Next to the layer icon you will see what looks like a target. Click on the target and move the cursor to the Comp Window until the Star becomes highlighted and then release the mouse button. ![]() When you release the mouse you should see the Star (Rotation) State appear attached to the Rotation Layer Over State. The two states are now linked. ![]() Create two more text layers for Left Right and Up Down. Follow the same procedure you just did to link the Left Right and Up Down layers to the Left Right Up Down Star Base States with the same names. ![]() Make a preview and view the results. ![]() With this understanding of how to link to Time Independent Groups, experiment by changing this composition so the Over State for each of the Text elements changes color and plays a sound, while the Down State is linked to the TIGs. You can also add an Out State so when you move off of the Text Layers the animation will stop. Also experiment with different elements and layout. Originally I created a LiveMotion project that was similar but instead of a Star I had a large image file, and instead of Left Right it was call Pan and instead of Up Down it was called Tilt, and instead of Rotation, I replaced it with Zoom. I used the resulting SWF file so students in one of my videography classes could interactively experiment with those camera concepts. For your enjoyment I have attached the complete LiveMotion file along with the SWF file for you to download and dissect. The file is compressed in sit format and can be downloaded here.
