Download: Custom Brushes for Corel Painter, Series 5 15 emulation brushes for chalk, charcoal and graphite By Dave Nagel We return to Corel Painter IX this month with a collection of 15 all-new brushes. This particular collection comes in response to numerous requests for natural media emulators, in particular tools for creating sketch-like effects. To this end, the brushes are designed to emulate dry media in both appearance and behavior, including such media as chalk, charcoal and graphite (pencil), as well as a bonus brush for smearing your drawings.

The brushes
The problem with most brushes designed to look like pencils, chalks and charcoals is that they usually don't behave much like them, and so you lose much of the experience of working with dry media when you attempt to sketch on your computer. This being my first collection of brushes for Painter designed to tackle this problem, it isn't perfect by any means. But it does take advantage of Painter's support for the Wacom Intuos line of tablets by allowing you to control a stroke much as you would if you were actually drawing with pencil or stick media. For example, several of the brushes are tapered in opacity, and you can use tilt and pressure to vary the darkness of the stroke and the width, while using direction to control the direction of the tapering (much like tilting a pencil on its side).

Well, rather than trying to explain it, I'll just show it. Here are the brushes in this collection, each applied with a single quick stroke.

These brushes are designed to work with Corel Painter IX on Mac OS X and WIndows systems. Continue on for download and installation instructions. Download and installation
This week's collection of brushes is designed for Corel Painter IX running on Mac OS X or Windows. It's compressed in a Zip archive, which can be decompressed using any Zip utility.

Once you download the brush file (NagelSeries5.zip), double-click the file to decompress it, or drag it over your preferred zip decompression utility. After the file is decompressed, you will see two items: a folder containing the brushes, and a JPEG image. Drag both of these items into your Brushes folder in your user directory, not within the application's folder itself. Note that the JPEG image is required, as it serves as the icon Painter uses for this brush category.

On Mac OS X, the directory for custom brushes is located at /Users/Yourname/Library/Application Support/Corel/Painter IX/Brushes/Painter Brushes.

Drop the folder and JPEG file into that directory, as seen above, and then launch Painter IX. The new brush category will show up in the Brush Selector bar.
