The brushes
The brushes in this latest collection for Synthetik Studio Artist 3.x (Nagel Series 14) are all designed to mimic the appearance and behavior of some familiar dry media tools. These include chalk, charcoal, conte, graphite and oil pastels, as well as a felt tip marker and a few brushes for blending your images. The graphite brushes include support for tilt and pressure so that you can simulate tilting a pencil to produce a wide edge or applying pressure to darken your stroke. The chalk brushes are textured to produce grainy results. The charcoal brushes also produce grainy results, although some of them also include a textured background for simulating a stroke drawn on canvas. (For these, lighter strokes produce a more visible canvas texture, while heavier strokes conceal the canvas. I'll be presenting a tutorial on this so that you can create your own brushes with textured backgrounds.) All of the brushes in the collection are, of course, fully customizable so that you can modify them to suit your needs.
Our latest series includes 25 total brushes. Here's a sampling of the brushes in this month's collection.

Download, installation and usage
Synthetik Studio Artist 3.0 is a Macintosh-only program. It runs in Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X, and these brushes will work in either version. After you download the "NagelSeries12.zip" file, decompress it using your favorite unzipping utility.
Download: Nagel Series 14 Paint Patches (200 KB)
The unstuffed folder will be called "NagelSeries14." Place this folder in your Presets folder inside your Studio Artist 3.0 folder. It's best to place them within the "Default" folder (/Studio Artist 3.0/Preset/ Default), although you can also place them within other directories inside the Preset folder, if you wish.

Either way, they will appear in the appropriate subdirectory in the Presets panel within Studio Artist after you quit and relaunch the program.

If you have any questions about these presets or other Studio Artist issues, be sure to visit me in the Studio Artist forum by clicking here. And remember, you can find all of our previous downloads for Studio Artist, Photoshop, Illustrator, Freehand, Expression and other applications in our Downloads Archive.
