Download: Studio Artist Texture Patches, Series 1 19 canvas and miscellaneous effects By Dave Nagel Every download we've offered for Synthetik Studio Artist thusfar has been in the area of paint brushes. But this week, we take a bit of a detour and offer up a new series of tools for Studio Artist: Texture Synth patches. These differ from brushes in that they aren't used for painting, but for creating textures on your images--either as background textures that interact with other tools or as straightforward effects that can be applied over an existing image.

The Texture Synth patches
The basic premise of this collection (Nagel Series 1 Textures) is to provide you with several starting points from which to build your own custom textures. The ones provided in this collection primarily fall into the category of canvases, with some variations producing other textures similar to canvases. We've covered the creation of custom textures extensively in our previous tutorial on Studio Artist. But with these presets, you can simply select them in the Presets/Texture Synthesizer category, then go into the Texture Synth itself to make your own modifications and save them out as new textures. Here are some examples of the basic textures in this collection.

But in addition to basic canvas textures that you can use to interact with your brushes, I've also included some Texture Synth-based effects. These work just like any other type of synthesized texture in Studio Artist, but they can be applied directly to your canvas to create effects over your existing image. The ones I've included in this first collection fall into two categories: canvas-like texture effects and chalky media effects.

Here's a look at some of the basic effects. (These can also be combined with other texture Synth effects, paint brushes or other types of effects in Studio Artist to produce pretty much endless variations.)

All of the presets in this collection are free to use for commercial and non-commercial work. They are fully customizable and can be modified to suit your needs.

Download, installation and usage
Synthetik Studio Artist 3.0 is a Macintosh-only program. It runs in Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X, and these Texture Synth presets will work in either version. After you download the "NagelSeries12.zip" file, decompress it using your favorite unzipping utility.

Download: Nagel Series 1 Textures (194 KB)

The unzipped folder will be called "NagelSeries1Textures." Place this folder in the following directory: /Applications/Studio Artist 3.0/TexSynth/Default.

The next time you launch Studio Artist, the Texture Synth patches will be available in the Texture Synthesizer Presets category.
