SIMPLE TIPS FOR C4D FROM AE 03 Using Graphic Tablet By Ko Maruyama After Effects.... CINEMA 4D....  a perfect marriage in a motion graphics broadcast house.  But what if you're an After Effects user who doesn't know CINEMA 4D?  As an After Effects and CINEMA 4D user, I note that there are many similarities between the programs.  Unfortunately their naming conventions are different.  In this short series of tips, I'll try to make a connection to C4D from AE.  With the new releases of CINEMA 4D, it is even easier for Adobe After Effects users to create their own 3D animations and incorporate them into their composites and animations.

This isn't a basics primer.  Instead, it's just a "heads up" when you want to find something in CINEMA 4D that you're already familiar with in Adobe's After Effects.

Many After Effects artists prefer to use a graphic tablet and stylus to drive around their applications (AE, Photoshop, Illustrator...).  However, many 3D modelers prefer to use a mouse (a multi-button mouse).  Because a multi-button mouse (5-button mouse) give you many more options than a pen, and because there are so many scriptable functions in 3D applications that are commonly used, a pen isn't necessarily the best tool for the application.

However, if you're like me, sometimes you just need to dip into C4D for a quick object or animation, then back out to After Effects.  In those cases, maybe you don't want to drop the pen and grab the mouse.

If you're the same, you'll need to switch your preferences in C4D so the application's values don't fly out of control.

1. Open Preferences

2. In the Common Preferences, choose "Graphic Tablet".  It's that easy.

You don't even need to restart the application.  Once you quit C4D, the setting will be remembered the next time you launch.

I quickly knocked out this model for the picture on the article, and have absolutely no reason to keep it around.  If you need a model of a graphic stylus..... MAKE IT.  It's as easy as drawing a spline shape (just like Illustrator), placing it into a LatheNURBS object (see NURBS tutorial) and click on a primitive object for "Capsule".

Be sure to switch on your Graphic Tablet option first.

Of course, if you need a start, you can download the C4D project here:

That's it for now.
