After Effects users, or artists who want to learn the software, constantly ask me which book they should buy as a guide. After Effects has been around for quite a while, and as a result, there are many books about the application. The first book I've seen on After Effects 7 is Angie's Creative After Effects 7. Here's the scoop.New to After Effects 7, or want to be? Well, then I don't have to ask - you're going to be using After Effects 7. After Effects 7 comes with a new interface, tons of new tools and resources. You won't find reference to any of these new features in any legacy books about he software. Luckily, professional artist and brilliant instructor, Angie Taylor has provided a guide to help all After Effects users.
This book is a fantastic learning resource - you'll keep it on your desktop as a constant guide.
I've seen all types of student methods for learning the software, but the one that seems to be most effective is one that incorporates practicing the technique while learning it. Creative After Effects 7 is full of straightforward lessons about techniques that are quickly and easily understood.
Imagery

Large reference images and text allow you to use the book off to the side of your keyboard, allowing you to focus on After Effects while you learn it. Of course, now that the interface is unified (it looks almost identical on both Mac and Windows operating systems), the images speak to both OS users.
Chapter Setups
As a new user, you may not be familiar with the concepts in the application (or After Effects' unique terminology). At the beginning of each chapter, there is a synopsis of the lesson, briefly describing what you can expect from the chapter. Chapters come with step-by-step, easy to follow instructions.
Lessons
There are more than enough lessons to get you up and running. Once you become familiar with the basics, there are additional lessons that cover some more advanced features, so you'll be able to challenge the foundations you learn in the first part of the book.
The lessons in the book are designed to help you, the artist, find the tools. This isn't about a specific tutorial to make one animation or another - it's about learning the application, so you can make MANY different kinds of animations. However, each lesson has a fun bit of animation as a result - each wonderfully spiked with Angie's specific style.
Overall
Creative After Effects 7 has everything you need to get started (and then some). The book comes with a DVD that contains video support, fonts and extras that will make learning a piece of cake. This book will allow you to quickly get a handle on the tools in the application so you can figure out how to make animations your own.
Of course words go to press, books go to readers, and the writer remembers one or two things - no matter what the book. Angie has solved that with her website that covers EVEN MORE than she could stuff into the book.
