George Elvin thinks lightweight, wireless computers may similarly transform the construction industry in the not-too-distant future.

Boxx Technologies 3DBOXX R4.2
The 64-bit computers have arrived, and whether you call them personal computers or workstations, there’s one thing you can call them and not be called to the carpet by the Better Business Bureau: Fast. Our first encounter with 64-bit computing is in the form of a BOXX Technologies workstation, the Dual Opteron 248-packing 3DBOXX R4.2 ($5728 as tested). Even though this speed demon was only running the currently 32-bit Windows XP Professional, it still turned in the fastest benchmark scores we’ve seen yet.
NAS for the Rest of Us at Home
How easy is it to set up a home NAS (Network Attached Storage) system? Easy! How Expensive? Downright cheap!! Miles Weston notes that with all the storage demands placed on the typical digitally-connected family, sometime the only viable solution is to create a central storage depot for everyone. Here’s where NAS can work wonders. It functions as a big home entertainment jukebox without the big cost and hassle. It’s done wonders for the Weston household – maybe it can do the same for yours.

Professional Home Studio Production
“Recording and Producing in the Home Studio” from Berklee Press is aimed at home studio recordists who want to give their music a more professional edge. Written by David Franz, it is one of the best books I’ve seen about running a home studio, taking readers from the basics of setting up a studio all the way through the mastering process.

CEDIA Home Theater/Automation Show: Marketing 101 At Its Finest
For years I have been intrigued by the "Home Theater" and "Home Automation" markets. Up until this year’s annual show, CEDIA, in Minneapolis, MN, I really couldn’t put a finger on it. I always kind of assumed it was because I am a gadget freak. CEDIA is really an eye-candy show -- every techno-geeks dream for the consumer audio- and video-phile. But, after walking the aisles for three days with about 20,000 other bewildered attendees, who, like me were amazed at the show’s growth in just 5-years from less than 5,000 people to nearly four times that number, I think I figured it out.

According to the SCRI/DMN Pro Audio Report, music audio emerges as the dominant pro audio sector with 43.8% of the pro audio facilities polled reporting music audio as the area they principally work in. The other principal areas reported include: audio for video, audio postproduction/mastering, and live sound.
Bill Black: Voice Over Producer & Sound Effects Designer
While most of you are probably sitting in front of your computer right now thinking of a new video game concept to make your first gazillion dollars, I’m sure one of the elements that you’re not recognizing is the need for catchy and compelling audio and sound effects to enhance the action of your gaming masterpiece.
