JUST THE BASICS Using Primitives in C4D By Ko Maruyama While there is a lot of control to be had by modeling using polygonal shapes and NURBS objects, there is no reason you can't start your exploration of CINEMA 4D software with some serious modeling using only primitive shapes and some simple modeling tools.  I put my assistant, Will Goodan to the task of modeling as much as he could without using splines, NURBS or editable meshes.   For rigid objects like this speaker, primitives worked just fine.

Here is a reference picture of an Edirol speaker monitor.  While I didn't give Will the luxury of time to create a model that would match the image exactly, I did give him latitude to interpret and change certain parts of the housing and speaker cones in order to get it finished quickly.

Here are some simple steps to get you on your way to building something similar using only primitives.  Use your own values to come up with a unique object set.  Click on the images to see larger views of the setup.

This procedure won't take you through the specific steps of the procedure, but instead give you an overview and demonstrate that the entire piece is created with simple primitives and modeling objects (Null Object and Boolean Object).  Have a specific question?  Check in with Rob Garrott at the DMN-CINEMA4D forum here.

1. Create a simple cube.
Stretch the cube into something that looks more like a speaker housing and set the edges to fillet.

2. Adding air ducts to your speaker.
First off, to get the holes to appear on our box first create an oil drum and use the boole tool to create the cavities on our speaker face. You can add rim to the air ducts by simply creating a torus the same size as our holes and fillet the edges.

3. Create the main speaker cone.
a) Boole the hole for the cone to sit in.
b) Create an oil drum the same size as the hole and use another booled oil drum slightly smaller to cut out the center of it.
c) The rubber cone rim is created by making a simple torus (same concept as the air ducts) and filleting the edge to make it rounded.
d) Next is the speaker cone which can be made with a simple cone and taking the cap off of it.
e) The inner ball of the cone is made by another oil tank and make the glue accents with small cylinders.
