3D Ghosts Sheets Simple Cloth in C4D By Ko Maruyama In the world of broadcast promo, it's been a mad push for fall campaigns all summer long, and chances are that you've already finished your Halloween campaigns by now (and they're airing), but if you haven't, here's an easy way to create some 3D "bedsheet" ghosts with CINEMA 4D's MOCCA module.

The first part of this tutorial deals with the simple creation of the ghost object.  While this is based on a static image for print, we'll make an animation in part two.

You'll need the MOCCA module for MAXON's CINEMA 4D for this tutorial.  The module comes standard if you've purchased the XL or STUDIO bundle.  If you purchased the base package only, you'll need to pick up the MOCCA module separately.  (I would suggest purchasing the XL package if you're going to create a lot of broadcast work this, you'll also pick up useful tools like Thinking Particles and 3 Net Clients).

If you don't have MOCCA, you can download the trial version with a demo version of BODYPAINT 3D at the MAXON WEBSITE.

1. One Plane.  One Sphere.

Create a Plane and a Sphere primitive.  Change both of them to simple polygonal meshes by making them editable. (shortcut is to select them, and press "C" on the keyboard).

click each for larger view

2A. Move the Plane object above the Sphere object along the Y-axis.
2B. Scale the Sphere object to 50m (radius)

3. Apply the MOCCA cloth tags.

Within the Object Window, you'll find the pulldown menu for File.  This contains a list of different tags that you can apply to the selected objects.   Apply CLOTH tag to the Plane.  Apply COLLIDER to the sphere.

4. Relax.

Select the CLOTH tag attached to the Plane object.  Select the Dresser parameter, then relax the fabric by clicking the "Relax" button.  (value=35) This will pull on the plane dynamically based on the parameters set in the CLOTH tag, but collide with the Sphere object.

Because this is influenced by the dynamics set up in the cloth tag, you may want to have the cloth collide with itself as well as the sphere.  (Expert->Self Collision = ON)

5. Add Cloth Subdivision.

A quick render shows how polygonally-challenged this plane is when turned into a cloth.  MOCCA comes with an object for ClothNURBS.  This object will not only allow you to subdivide the plane, but add thickness to it as well.

Make the Plane a child of the ClothNURBS object.

6. Lighting and Materials

Add your own lighting and materials to taste.

7. If you're like me and you've put a bit of noise into your alpha channel, or added transparency, or both - you'll notice that the collider is still visible.  Simply turn it off by shift-clicking on the render-visibility icon (2nd grey dot next to the object's name in the object manager).
