One of the nation's foremost authorities on bioterrorism, infectious diseases and emergency preparedness, Dr. Lucey will help guide the development of tools that assist hospitals with the management of illnesses ranging from a naturally-occurring pandemic to a bioterrorist attack.
PortBlue's CommandAware(TM) (www.commandaware.com) disaster and resource management system offers hospitals best practice guidance in developing a comprehensive incident management plan, built on top of a resource management platform that can be used in all operational conditions, from everyday admissions tracking, to emergency department overcrowding, to large scale mass casualty disasters.
"Dr. Lucey brings a unique combination of real-world, hands-on experience and an impeccable research background to the challenge of ensuring hospitals are prepared for an array of incidents including influenza pandemics, bioterrorism, or new diseases such as SARS," said Paul Dimitruk, CEO, PortBlue. "We will harness his knowledge of best-practices to deliver best-in-class tools that keep hospitals running when patients need them most."
Dr. Lucey headed the Infectious Diseases Service at the 900-bed Washington Hospital Center from 1998-2002 in Washington, DC. Since 2002 he has directed Washington Hospital Center's Center for Biologic Counterterrorism and Emerging Disease (www.BePast.org) within their Department of Emergency Medicine EROne Institutes.
During the SARS outbreak of 2003 he traveled to Hong Kong to gain first-hand knowledge of the epidemic, and worked as an infection control physician in a SARS-designated hospital in Toronto, Canada. Since 2004 he has met with colleagues in Thailand, Vietnam, Egypt, Israel, and China to discuss avian and pandemic influenza.
Following the Sept. 11th attacks and subsequent anthrax bioterrorism, Dr. Lucey received the US Army Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service and served on the Mayor's District of Columbia Bioterrorism Preparedness Committee.
A graduate of Dartmouth Medical School (1982), the University of California San Francisco Internal Medicine Residency (1985) and the Harvard School of Public Health (1988), Dr. Lucey served as a physician in the US military and US Public Health Service, worked at the National Institutes of Health and the FDA, and is a frequent speaker on infectious disease topics.
