First Look: Wolverine ESP Professional Portable Media Player Portable media playback and recording device for professional photographers By John Virata

The Wolverine ESP Professional Portable Media Player is a portable media player designed for professional and digital photography enthusiasts who also enjoy listening to music, watching videos and recording TV and FM radio on a single device. While it offers the capability to do these things, and it does it well, the real trick up its sleeve is the built in 7-in-1 card reader, enabling photographers to offload and review their digital photographs in the field, while freeing up their memory cards for more shooting.

The Wolverine ESP has a more elegant design. It is not bulky, but rather, it is more svelte than the previous Wolverine product that we reviewed. Available in 80GB and 120GB configurations, the ESP features a 3.6-inch TFT LCD for viewing video and image files, and a user replaceable Lithium ion battery. On the back of the device, you'll find the LCD display as well as the volume controls, escape/menu button and the joystick controller for navigating the simple menu.  The top of the unit is where you insert the memory cards, of which the Wolverine ESP supports Compact Flash, MicroDrive, Secure Digital, MMC, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, and XD Card.

ESP shown with optional. The cradle enables the Wolverine ESP to work as a DVR, and charges the device.

An optional adapter is available for those who need support for MS-Duo, MS Pro-Duo, Mini-SD and RS-MMC. You will also find video and audio ports at the top as well for hooking up the composite video cables to record TV and other video sources using the optional cradle ($79). The side of the Wolverine ESP features the power button and the convenient Hold button, that you can switch to ensure the device doesn't turn on at inopportune times. The front of the unit, where the LCD is located, features the esc/menu buttons, the volume controls, and the joystick controller for navigating the menuing system. There are no controls at the rear of the unit while the bottom features the docking connector as well as the USB port for those who wish to connect to a Macintosh or Windows computer via USB cable.

Photos
Photos can be viewed by simply plugging in a memory card and viewing them off the memory card. You can then import them into the Wolverine ESP via photo backup, or full backup which grabs the extra data captured by the digital camera. When you import the images to the Wolverine ESP, clicking on the image will bring up a large view. From here, there are several things that you can do with the images besides view them.

Press the menu button, and you can change the view mode (fit screen, max visible, actual size, and fit width); Show Exif data, show file counter, show status bar; view images as a slide show, with transitions (random, fade in, blocking, wipe out, or none); Delete image, Print, Printer options, and Set as background. Another notable feature is the Wolverine ESP can print to Pict Bridge enabled printers. In addition to JPEG, BMP, GIF, and TIFF file formats, the ESP supports RAW files as well from the most popular digital cameras. the company constantly updates its RAW file support, so if your camera's RAW files are not yet supported, a simple email of the file to the company will get the engineers working on support.
